Monsters, Inc. (4-Disc Edition) [Blu-ray] (2001)

The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio’s fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed “Boo,” who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (Toy Story) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. –Doug Thomas

Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6 – Reformatting USB Flash Memory

August 3rd, 2009

Flash memory or USB memory is similar to disk drives. In fact it is recommended you ‘reformat’ them often in order to keep the entire memory clean and workable. I would recommend you reformat your 256MB flash memory with the software that came with it. If none came with it, do a web search on the manufacturer type. There you will find free downloadable software to use to accomplish this task.

Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6

Remember that USB flash memory in a system is handled like another disk drive. Therefore you must contact the manufacturer determine if the flash memory can be ‘reformatted’ to meet the new requirements. The flash memory I have can be done like this so it allows a different format.

The 4GB SanDisk Compact Flash card features an advanced design from SanDisk that allows it to operate in cameras that use either the FAT16 or FAT32 file formats. It is the only Compact Flash card of its capacity and compatibility level that is available in the popular Type I format and fits into any Compact Flash slot.

Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6

The new 4GB SanDisk Compact Flash card features a three-position switch located in the left-hand area of the card so consumers can switch between either a single 4GB (FAT32) volume or two separate 2GB (FAT16) volumes. The switchable 4GB card ensures that users of cameras with either file format will be able to use the new card. For maximum customer satisfaction, SanDisk will initially ship the card in a FAT16 configuration-two FAT 16 partitions-eliminating the need for most users to reposition the switch and reformat.

As you mentioned, the briefcase can be trickier and to be perfectly honest I would not use it myself. I prefer to simply copy the data I want backed up directly on to the device. Have you tried doing this and then “testing” to see if it’s still there after coming out of hibernation? Copy and paste a few files onto the device. Close the lid of your laptop and wait for a bit. Open the lid and after the pc comes out of hibernation, see if your files are there.

Hopefully that will work and if so I’d stick with that option. Other than that you could try contacting the manufacturer or having a look on their website, it could be a known issue which hopefully has a fix?

Flash drives usually work with Windows XP right out of the box. For Windows 98, you usually need to install drivers for the particular drive that you have. If you go to the flash drive manufacturer’s web site, they will more than likely have drivers for Win.98. Well, if your flash drive is still functioning fine then it would be the motherboard or even the port coming from the motherboard or card, depending on the location of the USB port.

The USB drive could cause an issue but it is a minor device. To be honest, I don’t know if I could determine that without being there to check the devices even if you gave me more details. My first gut is the system board or PCI card that is hosting the USB port is bad. Sometimes the actual port will just die but the others on the PC will work. The main issue is that these USB ports have a small amount of power going through them to power certain USB devices and a cheap USB drive might get fried.

Email Marketing Boosts Your Brand

July 31st, 2009

In today’s economy of intense competition, a company’s brand is of paramount importance. This is further enhanced by the fact that the Internet makes your nearest competitor just a click away.

The values associated with your brand can make the difference between having lots of repeat customers and constantly losing people after one sale. It can mean the difference between having positive word of mouth advertising working for you and having a diluted conception of who you actually are. These brand values ultimately make a big difference to your bottom line, and they’re something every business owner or brand manager should be looking at closely if they want to secure the longevity of their brand.

Email marketing is a key element of the brand building exercise that often goes overlooked by decision makers. People will spend countless hours, days and weeks analyzing their websites and making sure each page has a consistent feel. But how long are your customers really on your website? While all of us wish we were eBay with a retention time per user in excess of 90 minutes (source: Nielsen//NetRatings), the fact remains we are not. Email marketing lets you impose your brand values on your customers (and prospective customers!) even after they leave your website.

If your customer spends 7 minutes on your website, do you think they have absorbed enough of your brand values? Think of popular brands in today’s marketplace: when someone says McDonalds you instantly think and feel certain things, but those values were built up over a long period of time (…definitely dwarfing the 7 minutes you got to spend interacting with your customer!). But, email marketing can help fill that void. The best email marketing programs will offer email signup boxes for your website, so you can prompt your site visitors to sign up for your newsletters, coupons, promotions, etc.

By sending effective email marketing campaigns to your customers, you can communicate with them even after they’ve left your website. This is not to suggest that your strategy should be to bombard your customers with constant email marketing messages so that they have no choice but to remember your brand. In this case, your email marketing may have effectively gotten your customers to know your name, but the brand values you are communicating is that you are excessively annoying (and you probably don’t want that!).

An effective email marketing strategy for brand building would be a monthly or bi-weekly newsletter. You want to send enough email marketing messages so that your customer gets a feel for your company and keeps you in mind for their future purchases. It’s important that your email marketing campaigns reinforce the brand values you began to setup while the customer was on your website. While your customers may not become brand loyal after just one email marketing message, over time your brand will become ingrained in the ‘purchasing habits’ part of their psyche and that’s exactly what you are striving for.

The nice thing about email marketing in conjunction with brand building is that it is very viral. Once you have brand loyal customers, they essentially become your brand ambassador and that means they can easily forward your message to their friends and colleagues (most email marketing programs should have a ‘forward to friend’ feature). This is a huge benefit because when John gets an email from his friend Mike saying “Hey John, these guys sell the absolute best widgets, check out their flyer below”, you better believe that John will be landing on your website ready and eager to be your customer.

Email marketing, when done correctly, keeps the lines of communication open long after a customer has visited your website, which gives you the time to build your brand and ultimately reap the benefits.

Paranoia (Kindle Edition) – book

July 25th, 2009

Paranoia

From Publishers Weekly
Is it too early to declare Finder’s fifth novel (after High Crimes) the most entertaining thriller of 2004? Probably, but it will be a surprise if another suspenser proves as much sheer fun as Finder’s robust tale of corporate espionage. Narrator Adam Cassidy’s trip to hell begins when he charges to the company an unauthorized, very expensive party for a retiring blue-collar laborer at their place of work, Wyatt Telecom.

Paranoia

Caught, low-level staffer Adam is given an offer he can’t refuse by monstrously slick and wealthy CEO Nick Wyatt: penetrate rival high-tech giant Trion Systems and get the goods on Trion’s killer new products, or face a battery of felony charges. Adam accepts the deal, and days later he’s at Trion, along with false credentials that persuade Trion that he was a key player at Wyatt Telecom, rather than a cube-squatting shlub. Finder presents Adam’s thrust into Trion as the scary, grand adventure of a stranger in a strange land, as Adam must contend with a new corporate culture and a host of envious enemies, particularly once he’s tapped to be Trion founder Jock Goddard’s personal assistant. As Adam comes to admire, even to love, Jock, the demands by Wyatt for ever better intel grate all the more. But if Adam refuses, prison awaits, and anyway he loves his big new salary and perks, not to mention his new, lovely Trion bedmate. Adam’s love/hate relationship with his bitter, dying dad and his fragmenting friendship with a pal he’s left behind add texture to the relentless suspense, punctuated by tense cloak-and-dagger scenes as Adam steals secrets from his new bosses. A first-rate surprise ending packs a wallop. This novel is the real deal: a thriller that actually will keep readers up way past their bedtimes.

Paranoia

From The New Yorker
In another age, a genre thriller fairly required the brandishing of a weapon and blood smeared on the floor. Finder’s latest is the archetype of the thriller in its contemporary form: e-mail is the means of communication and threat, industrial espionage among nasdaq competitors the field of violence. The novel’s great strength is its fetishistic attention to the idioms and buzzwords of the tech business and the up-to-the-second catalogue of perfidy’s rewards: the particular Bordeaux or the particular Porsche that tickles the impulses of the New Greedy. For a while, Finder’s plot seems less vivid than the status details he gives such attention to, but late in the book we discover how completely we have been fooled, and with real escapist pleasure.

This review is from: Paranoia (Hardcover)

Author Joseph Finder has written about espionage and international affairs for the New York Times and other newspapers, and is also a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers. So it would stand to reason that he had seen it all in the realm of espionage. Yet, in the acknowledgements at the end of the book, he states that his research on his other novels “has taken me around the world and into places like KGB headquarters in Moscow, but nothing prepared me for how strange and fascinating I’d find the world of the American high-tech corporation.” In Paranoia, he combines high-tech business with corporate security and espionage to create an exciting thriller that the reader will not soon forget.
Paranoia

Adam Cassidy is the quintessential slacker who is tired of his job at Wyatt Telecom. He diverts corporate funds to throw a large retirement party for a loading dock employee, and he fully expects to be fired for it. But instead he is threatened with criminal charges if he does not agree to steal highly confidential product plans from Trion, a rival of Wyatt. With the help of the Wyatt’s CEO, security chief, and executive coach, he is groomed for an executive job at Trion. He is taught to breach the tightest corporate security and turn over his findings. Thus begins his life as a corporate spy, where the game he is playing becomes more and more treacherous, his loyalties to his friends and employers are stretched to the limit, and he is caught in a web of deceit from which there seems to be no exit.
Paranoia

The characters are well drawn and believable. Finder expertly depicts Adam’s struggle with his conscience, his problems with his ailing father and best friend, his worries about being unmasked as a spy, and his fondness for his Trion CEO. This makes him a very sympathetic protagonist. The two corporate presidents are strongly contrasted: the Wyatt CEO is ruthless, aloof, and vain; the Trion CEO is paternal, benevolent, and demands honesty. Also included in the interesting cast of characters are a quirky staff engineer, some power-hungry middle managers, a jealous and competitive coworker, and a shady security chief with a penchant for violence.

The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and the final plot twist was a powerhouse. Not only is this a fast-paced thriller, but it provides fascinating facts about espionage and corporate security. Each section defines an espionage term, which is then exemplified in the story line. I was shocked to learn about how lax corporate security can be, permitting access to password-protected PCs and locked offices and file cabinets. Even badge readers and biometric scanners can be circumvented. This is definitely worth reading, but be sure to schedule it for when you have some spare time, because once you start it you will have trouble putting it down.
